Dedicated Server

The dedicated servers commonly referred to as dedicated hosting are the elite applications in the web hosting world. A dedicated server is a single computer in a network reserved for network needs and is mainly used as a network server. It is leased and stored in the data center of the host company and provides services for only one account or domain name. It is therefore specifically used by one organization and it includes an operating system (mostly some variants of Linux or Windows) a web server, related software (such as a SQL server, Control Panel and much more) and connection to the Internet. For web sites or a group of related company sites that generate a lot of traffic a dedicated server is typically required. The server can usually be configured and operated remotely from the host company while still allowing for client customization and is assigned to function only as a resource server and cannot be used as a client. It is important to note that the server is owned by the web host and clients do not have physical access to it.

When developing a complex business or a high-end e-commerce site more space and security is needed, a web server dedicated to your business is the perfect solution. A dedicated web server is purchased by a company when they want more control of their server. The hardware is rented or purchased from the hosting company, and then the hosting company supports and manages it. Internet connectivity is provided to the server, in many cases over 10 or 100 Mb/s Ethernet. Dedicated servers are most often housed in datacenters, similar to co-location facilities, providing redundant power sources and HVAC systems. The financial benefit with cheap dedicated server hosting is immense, large initial investments are not needed.

Dedicated hosting in two flavors: managed and unmanaged hosting

An operating system, hardware, web server and Internet connection are typically included in unmanaged hosting plans. The basics and for the most part everything else needed is included in the managed plans, the only place your concerns need to lie is managing your web site and it's content.

A dedicated server is also commonly used as a computer that manages printer resources. It is important to note that not all servers are dedicated; it is possible for a computer to act as a server and perform other functions as well.
