Dedicated Server Hosting

What is a Dedicated Server?

The dedicated servers, also referred to as dedicated hosting, are the Rolls Royce in the web hosting business. A dedicated server is a heavy-duty computer that is used exclusively as a network server; a single computer in a network solely used for network needs. It is related to the rental and exclusive use of a computer and it offers services for simply one account or domain name. It is used exclusively by one business, and is leased and stored in the data center of the host company.

A dedicated server includes a web server, operating system (predominantly some variant of Linux or Windows) related software (such as a SQL server, Control Panel, etc.) and connection to the Internet, all stored in the data center of the web hosting company. Web sites or groups of related company sites that develop a substantial amount of traffic typically require dedicated server hosting. The server can normally be configured and operated remotely from the host company while still giving access to client customization. A dedicated server is assigned to function only as a resource server and cannot be used as a client. Seeing that server is owned by the web host, you do not have physical access to it and it is important to take note of this.

While developing a complex business or a high-end e-commerce site, dedicated web hosting is beneficial as space and security is a necessity - a web server dedicated to your business. This can be purchased by a business when they want or need more control of their server. The hardware is purchased or rented from the hosting company who then supports and manages it. Internet connectivity is provided to the server, in many cases over 10 or 100 Mb/s Ethernet. Dedicated servers are most frequently housed in datacenters, similar to co-location facilities, supplying redundant power sources and HVAC systems. The financial benefit with inexpensive dedicated server hosting is huge; large initial investments are not needed.

Dedicated hosting in two flavors: managed and unmanaged hosting

Unmanaged hosting plans commonly include operating system, hardware, web server and Internet connection. Managed plans however include the basics and for the most part everything else needed, the only place your concerns need to lie is managing your web site and it's content.

A dedicated server is also commonly used as a computer that manages printer resources. Nevertheless, it is important to note that not all servers are dedicated. In some networks, it is possible for a computer to act as a server and perform other functions as well.
